This piece, and some additional accessories (which will be shown in the next deviation) took me a solid week's work to complete. Everything except for the original Barbie figure was hand-made by me from scratch.
Hair The Barbie I used had a mass of tangled curls down to her waist. I cut it, washed it, dyed it with acrylic paint to a nice grey, and styled it.
Armour European 4in1 chainmail shirt. The rings were made by winding some old wire around a crochet hook handle and clipping the resultant coil. The pattern was entirely made up on the go.
The headdress is made from the leftover rings from a jewellery project my housemate did earlier this year. Again, the pattern was made up as I went to best fit Barbie's head.
Metal greaves and bracers were cut from coke-can metal and lightly shaped and embossed to give them form without looking too fussy.
Skirt Left-over fabric from my ball-gown was cut and sewn by hand and edged with fabric-paint in bright colours.
Sandals Leather soled with suede straps. It was difficult to make anything that would support Barbie's feet properly due to the extreme angle. She still can't stand unsupported, but at least she doesn't look as unstable when she's resting against something!
Belt Leather with a buckle made from coke-can metal and a bit of silver wire.
Bag Simple sewn fabric. Easier than most of the rest of the stuff.
Quarterstaff This is a miniature of a LARP weapon. It's made from foam, with a solid core. The core is tipped at each end with puncture resistant fabric to stop it from piercing the foam if someone thrusts with it (which they shouldn't be doing as it's against the rules in this system). I didn't really need to tip the core, since Barbie is unlikely to be stabbing with it, but I'm a completist. The whole thing was then carved into shape and coated with latex mixed with brown acrylic paint to give a safe striking surface with a wood effect. The handgrips are made from the same suede as her sandals.
Spell Cards The spell-cards were drawn by hand in pencil. They're modeled on the spell-cards used in the Lorien Trust system of LARP (which is the one I play). For non-LARPers: spell-cards are a way of keeping track of how many spells you are allowed to cast in a day. When you cast a spell you tear one of the cards. When you have no more cards you can't cast any more spells until the next day. This Barbie is a very low-level spellcaster, with only four spells a day.
Yeah, one of my favourite Barbie acessories was an army-green rucksack. I have no idea where it came from, but it made games with Barbie so much more playable!
Thanks!
